GPRS Phone Settings for use with netPad

26th April 2002

The following is a list of the settings used with various phones to connect to GPRS services using a UK Vodafone SIM.  The list is not yet complete as we are currently still awaiting a serial cable for the Motorola T280 and the Panasonic GD95.  The cables used for testing were the official accessories to the specific phone and the netpad modem connection cable.  All settings are as the default where no setting is given.

It should be noted that the connection contexts used in the data init string are alterable within the ranges allowed by the particular phone.  Please see the note at the end of this document for more details.

Via Infrared:

The T65 does not appear to support the DI-28 infrared connector and has no IrDA port, so it was not possible to connect via infrared.  The settings below relate to the T68 and R520m.

As above except:

----------------------------

Name – Ericsson GPRS

Speed – 115200

Connect – Infrared

Fax Class – Auto

----------------------------

Via Docking Station:

As above except:

----------------------------

Name – Ericsson GPRS

Speed – 57600

Connect – Docker

Fax Class – Auto

----------------------------

Internet applet

----------------------------

Use smart dialling – unchecked

Standard dial-up number - *99***3#

----------------------------

Speed – 115200

Connect – Infrared

Fax Class – Auto

----------------------------

Loudspeaker in use – Never

(the above line should be left blank for a standard GSM dialup connection)

----------------------------

Flow control – none

DSR/DTR – unchecked

DCD – unchecked

Modem type – Fixed Line (this phone does not appear to support the GSM command AT+CNMI=? And the error message causes the GSM negotiation to fail , so fixed line is necessary)

----------------------------

Internet applet

----------------------------

Use smart dialling – unchecked

Standard dial-up number - *99#

----------------------------

Manual login – Unchecked

Username – (As supplied by Service provider, “web” for UK Vodafone)

Data init. String  – AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”INTERNET”

(the above line should be left blank for a standard GSM dialup connection)

----------------------------

Flow control – Software (Xon/Xoff)

DSR/DTR – unchecked

DCD – unchecked

Modem type – Mobile

----------------------------

It should be noted that cable (and docker) connection was very erratic using the 6310.  Most attempts to connect to GPRS, fax or dialup ISP failed.  This appeared to be caused by the 6310 replying to an AT command with an ψ character (xF8 was displayed on a packet monitor) instead of CR,  LF,  OK.

Note On PDP Contexts

Many phones may have WAP settings setup in their default contexts (i.e. CGDCONT=1).  It is always useful to use the Comms application to ascertain if any contexts are currently setup for other services, do this with the command “AT+CGDCONT?” this should display all the contexts that are currently setup on the phone.

If the phone is already using the a context , you should use a different one, and modify the number used in the dialup number to say which context to use.

Example:

The Nokia 6310 has WAP services setup for GPRS.   I check the contexts on the phone in the Comms app with  the above command (AT+CGDCONT?).   The reply displayed is:      +CGDCONT: 1,“IP”,“wap.vodafone.co.uk”,,0,0

                        +CGDCONT: 2,“IP”,“wap.genie.co.uk”,,0,0

I can then use another query of the PDP context to ascertain how many contexts the phone can have using the command query AT+CGDCONT=? Which gives the response:          +CGDCONT: (1-2),“IP”, , , (0,1),(0,1)

This tells me that I can only set two contexts on this phone as seen in the (1-2).  I will have to overwrite one of the above to use GPRS to connect externally using the netpad.

I decide to overwrite the Genie WAP settings and therefore set the Data init string for this modem in the Modem Applet of the Control Panel to: AT+CGDCONT= 2,“IP”,“INTERNET” (the remaining parameters in the context setting can be ignored).

I also need to tell the GPRS ISP that I have setup to use the second PDP context.  This is achieved by setting the dialup number to *99***2#, as opposed to the *99# (as displayed in the settings above, which dials the default context).

Different phones allow different numbers of contexts to be set.  The Nokia 6310 allows two, the Ericsson T65 allows ten! (more than enough for all the WAP gateways and internet connections that you are likely to want).
